{"id":452,"date":"2026-02-03T13:43:34","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T20:43:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/center.uccs.edu\/cse\/?p=452"},"modified":"2026-02-03T13:43:34","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T20:43:34","slug":"a-look-back-at-2025-and-whats-coming-in-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/center.uccs.edu\/cse\/2026\/02\/03\/a-look-back-at-2025-and-whats-coming-in-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"A look back at 2025, and what&#8217;s coming in 2026!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we move into the early weeks of 2026, we wanted to take a moment to pause, look back on the past year, and share a glimpse of what\u2019s ahead for the Center for the Study of Evangelicalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the Center officially launched in late 2024, 2025 marked our first full year of sustained programming &#8211; and it quickly became clear just how much appetite there is for careful, historically grounded, and publicly engaged scholarship on Evangelicalism. Over the course of the year, we were grateful to host a wide range of conversations that reflected both the diversity of the field and the urgency of the questions it raises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking Back: 2025 at the Center<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout 2025, the Center hosted 15 public events, welcoming 16 scholars<strong>, <\/strong>journalists, and public intellectuals, and drawing thousands of attendees including students, faculty, clergy, and community members. Our events took place on campus at UCCS, in partnership with community venues, and at CU Denver &#8211; reflecting our commitment to meeting audiences where they are and fostering conversations that extend beyond the university. Please visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@TheCSE-UCCS\/videos\">Center\u2019s YouTube channel <\/a>for videos of most of the following talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our year began in February with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Jimmy\u2019s Faith: Baldwin &amp; Black Religion \u2014 An Evening with Christopher W. Hunt<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Dr. Christopher W. Hunt (Colorado College) joined us to discuss James Baldwin, disidentification, and the queer possibilities of Black religion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spiritual Relation &amp; Hallowed Ground \u2014 An Evening with Todne Thomas<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Dr. Todne Thomas<em> <\/em>(Yale University) explored Black evangelical sociality, kinship, and the sacred through ethnographic research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March, we turned to the fraught intersection of religion and politics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>White Christian Nationalism &amp; the Future of U.S. Politics<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>A moderated conversation with <em>Dr. Anthea Butler<\/em> (University of Pennsylvania) and <em>Dr. Randall Balmer<\/em> (Dartmouth College) helped us to examine race, power, and the political legacies of white evangelicalism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">April brought conversations about division, punishment, and public life:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Exvangelicalism &amp; Political Division \u2014 An Evening with Sarah McCammon<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Sarah McCammon (NPR) reflected on leaving, reforming, and reimagining evangelical spaces in contemporary America.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Crime, Punishment, &amp; Evangelicalism \u2014 An Evening with Aaron Griffith<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Dr. Aaron Griffith (Duke Divinity School) discussed evangelicalism\u2019s shaping role in American criminal justice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In May, we widened our lens to global and economic systems:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Religion and Capitalist Humanitarianism \u2014 An Evening with Lucia Hulsether<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Dr. Lucia Hulsether (Skidmore College) examined neoliberalism, moral critique, and global humanitarianism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The start of the fall semester deepened these conversations across culture, history, and theology:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Evangelical Literature &amp; Culture \u2014 An Evening with Karen Swallow Prior<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Confronting the Heresy of Christian Nationalism \u2014 An Evening with Shane Claiborne<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Evangelical Empire &amp; the Pacific Rim \u2014 An Evening with Helen Jin Kim<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">October centered questions of gender, authority, and institutional life:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Between Ordination and Expectation: Women and Evangelical Ministry \u2014 An Evening with Beth Allison Barr<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in November, we concluded the year with our Fall Mini-Conference:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cultures of Evangelicalism: Past, Present, &amp; Future<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Featuring <em>Matthew Sutton, Karen Johnson, Ansley Quiros, Paul Putz,<\/em> and <em>Isaac Sharp<\/em>, this gathering created space for sustained reflection on evangelical history, race, politics, biography, and culture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taken together, these events reflect what we hope the Center can offer: a space for rigorous scholarship, careful listening, and conversations that resist simplification and stereotypes while remaining relevant to the community.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"621\" src=\"https:\/\/center.uccs.edu\/cse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-03-at-3.31.48-PM-1024x621.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-453\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.6489785902705356;width:473px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/center.uccs.edu\/cse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-03-at-3.31.48-PM-1024x621.png 1024w, https:\/\/center.uccs.edu\/cse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-03-at-3.31.48-PM-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/center.uccs.edu\/cse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-03-at-3.31.48-PM-768x466.png 768w, https:\/\/center.uccs.edu\/cse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-03-at-3.31.48-PM.png 1102w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">____________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking Ahead: 2026 Programming<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we move further into 2026, we\u2019re excited to continue building on this momentum. Upcoming plans include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Friday, April 3rd at 6pm (Location TBD): <\/strong>Jesus Springs: Evangelical Capitalism and the Fate of an American City<em> &#8211; <\/em>An Evening with William Schultz (University of Chicago)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Friday, May 7th at 6pm (ENT Center for the Arts): <\/strong>The Violent Take it by Force: The Christian Movement that is Threatening Our Democracy &#8211; An Evening with Matthew D. Our first series, <strong><em>The Postscript<\/em><\/strong>, offers reflective conversations with visiting speakers following their campus lectures. It is a tradition that continues to shape American religious life, political discourse, cultural imagination, and social belonging in complex and sometimes unsettling ways. At a moment when public conversations about religion often become flattened or polarized, the work of the Center is grounded in the conviction that understanding &#8211; historical, cultural, and critical &#8211; is essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We remain committed to fostering scholarship that is rigorous without being insular, critical without being dismissive, and publicly engaged without sacrificing nuance.
